THIRD WORLD NETWORK BIOSAFETY INFORMATION SERVICE

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

RE: AHTEG Roadmap for Risk Assessment

The Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Risk Assessment and Risk Management was established by Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety at its Fourth Meeting in 2008, to provide further guidance on specific aspects of risk assessment, in accordance with Annex III to the Protocol.

The AHTEG has produced “Guidance on Risk Assessment of Living Modified Organisms”, which comprises a ‘Roadmap’ for risk assessment, and a series of guidance documents for risk assessment of specific types of LMOs and traits (LMOs with stacked genes or traits, abiotic stress tolerant LM crops, and LM mosquitoes). This guidance is presented as Annex III to document UNEP/CBD/BS/COP-MOP/5/12, which has been prepared for the Fifth Meeting of the Parties in Nagoya (11-15 October 2010).

The Roadmap provides guidance on how to effectively use Annex III and elaborates on the technical and scientific process of how to apply the steps and points to consider in the process of risk assessment.

Please find below a briefing paper that highlights the significance and importance of the Roadmap and its contribution in providing Parties sound guidance to implement Annex III of the Protocol.

With best wishes,
