Gene Sequences and Biopiracy: Protecting Benefit-sharing as Synthetic Biology Changes Access to Genetic Resources
We are pleased to share a TWN Briefing Paper on Gene sequences and biopiracy: Protecting benefit-sharing as synthetic biology changes access to genetic resources. The Briefing Paper addresses how the combination of advanced sequencing and synthesis technologies afforded by synthetic biology is transforming access to genetic resources. In the absence of updated approaches in access and benefit sharing laws to take account of this emerging reality, ‘digital biopiracy’ may well occur, with no prior informed consent from provider peoples or countries, and no benefit-sharing. The issue is currently on the agenda of several international processes, with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing poised to take the lead.
