Climate Change and Food Systems Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa

THIRD WORLD NETWORK INFORMATION SERVICE ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Dear friends and colleagues,

Re: Climate Change and Food Systems Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa

FAO has recently released the hard copy of the book, Climate Change and Food Systems Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa, which was co-published with Third World Network and the Institute for Sustainable Development, Ethiopia. The contents page is pasted below for your information.

Some of the chapters showcase the successes of ecological agriculture, in providing food security and rural livelihoods, in particular via the ‘Tigray Project’, which has been successfully implemented in northern Ethiopia and has now been scaled up in the country.

Another chapter, “Establishing a community seed supply system: Community seed bank complexes in Africa” by Melaku Worede, highlights the role of community seed banks in the conservation and utilization of community-managed genetic resources. Within traditional farming systems, community-managed seed banks and on-farm farmers’ variety maintenance are important components that serve as a source of sustained seed supply, as well as genetic materials for improved cultivar selection and enhancement. Maintenance of diversity both within and among species is crucial to supporting and developing agriculture that is ecologically sustainable and helps local communities cope with the challenges of climate change.
