Toxic corn: Summary of new scientific evidence of the health dangers
posed by Genetically Engineered corn.
08 August 2007
This report (21 pages) summarizes recent scientific evidence on the
toxicity of genetically engineered corn. Greenpeace submitted this
report to British Columbia provincial health minister George Abbott in
the context o a public consultation led by that province’s health
ministry. It cites a French research institute’s findings that
Monsanto’s NK603 corn was found to be toxic to rats in recent clinical
trials. Peer reviewed research cited in the report also found immune
response abnormalities in salmon and further evidence of toxicity in
rats for Monsanto’s MON810 and MON863 corn. Together these studies
provide a clear warning of the potential risks British Columbians face
from a diet containing unknown, unlabelled and uncontrolled genetically
engineered ingredients. Greenpeace demands that the government of
British Columbia adopt mandatory labelling of genetically engineered
food. These demands also were underlined in our recent action which drew
a question mark in a genetically engineered corn field in British Columbia.
