Dear friends and colleagues
FAQs on Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA)
We are pleased to share with you these FAQs on Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA), published by the African Centre for Biodiversity and Third World Network.
The WEMA initiative aims to develop drought-tolerant and insect-resistant maize, using conventional breeding, marker-assisted breeding, and genetic engineering. Five African countries – Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda – are participating in WEMA.
The FAQs unpack WEMA, looking at various aspects such as the ability of genetic engineering to deliver drought tolerance, yield data, stacking with the insect resistance trait, the claims of safety, intellectual property aspects and alternatives to genetic engineering.
